Lille 1-0 Real Madrid: Los Blancos' Player Ratings as they suffer first UCL defeat in over a year | UEFA Champions League 2024-25

Real Madrid looked toothless as they fell to a 1-0 defeat at Lille in Round 2 of the UEFA Champions League played at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy. It was the first-ever meeting between the two clubs and the French side secured a heroic victory.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti was forced into one change from the previous UCL game as Endrick started in place of Kylian Mbappe. However, the Brazilian teenager looked out of touch as he struggled to make an impact on the proceedings.

Lille and their visitors shared nearly equal possession in the first half, with players like Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham putting in decent shifts for Los Blancos. The hosts, meanwhile, relied on defender Tiago Santos and goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier to keep things tight at the back.

The deadlock was broken on the cusp of half-time after Eduardo Camavinga handled the ball following a Lille free kick. Jonathan David stepped up to take the resultant penalty for the hosts and put them 1-0 up in the third added minute at the end of the first half. Real Madrid trailed by a goal at the break.

Knowing the task at hand, Real Madrid emerged for the second period with a spring in their step and a desire to keep possession for lengthier spells. They forced Lille to sit back and absorb the pressure as they committed men forward in search of an equalizer. However, they seemed to lack the finishing touch in the box as multiple players missed good chances.

Ancelotti brought on the likes of Mbappe, Luka Modric and Arda Guler to reinvigorate his side. However, Real Madrid attempted eight shots with four of those on target but still did not find a way past Chevalier in the hosts' goal. Lille, on the other hand, dug deep and could not manage a single shot on target, but saw out the second half to secure a historic win against Los Blancos.

On that note, let's take a look at Real Madrid's player ratings.

Los Blancos' skipper put in a busy shift in defence, winning nine of his 12 duels and making three interceptions and five tackles. He also played one key pass to open up the attack.

Militao seemed to struggle a bit and was not very involved in his team's defence and was also subbed off early in the second half.

Mendy's inconsistencies continued in this match as he was subbed off for Fran Garcia at the halfway mark in the contest.

Eduardo Camavinga - 7/10

Camavinga gave away the crucial penalty that ultimately cost Real Madrid the game. However, he performed well apart from that, winning nine duels and playing one key pass.

Endrick - 6/10

Endrick looked out of sorts and was subbed off just after half-time after receiving a yellow card.

Vinicius Junior - 7.5/10
