Liverpool news: Steven Gerrard admits MK Dons job came 'too soon', looking to return to Anfield
Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard says he turned down the MK Dons’ managerial job because the offer came ‘too soon’. Currently, without a club having run down his 18-month contract with MLS side LA Galaxy, Gerrard was heavily linked to replace Karl Robinson at the London League One club.
The former England skipper reportedly had offers to play for the likes of Celtic – under former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers – and Newcastle - under another former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez. But he's keeping his options open for the chance to potentially return to Liverpool in a role yet to be confirmed by either party.
Echoing what his close friend Jamie Carragher said a few days ago, Gerrard admitted the chance to manage MK Dons came too soon – albeit he’s still working on his UEFA A licence.
“I’m just taking a bit of time to consider what’s next, exciting times moving forward,” he told BT Sport.
“I spoke to MK Dons. I had a chat with the chairman, it’s a very exciting job for somebody else but it’s a bit soon for me. But it’s true, I did speak to them.”
Earlier in the month, when speaking to a Q&A session for a bunch of Galaxy fans, Gerrard reiterated his desire to go back to Liverpool. "I will be going home at some point," he said. "I don't want to start any unnecessary rumours. I'm really happy where I am at the moment. But I'm sure somewhere down the line I will represent Liverpool Football Club.”
And Gerrard will be pleased to know he always has the chance to move back to the club thanks to their current manager Jurgen Klopp keeping the door open. “Steven Gerrard – and this will be a really big surprise – is always so welcome at Liverpool FC,” Klopp said last month.
“You cannot imagine how welcome so absolutely no problem, but everything we will talk to each other about will stay in these talks. That is how I know Stevie and that is how I am. Nobody should be worried that we don’t have space for Steven Gerrard. Everything will be fine, 100%.”
Gerrard made 748 appearances for his boyhood club and has won multiple trophies apart from the coveted English Premier League title. He’s won three League Cups, two FA cups, one UEFA Champions League, one Community Shield, one UEFA Cup and one UEFA Super Cup.
