Liverpool plan to urge FIFA to allow Luis Suarez to train during ban
Liverpool are planning to issue a plea to FIFA to allow Luis Suarez to train with the club during his four-month ban from all football activity, reports theDaily Express.
FIFA have also banned Suarez for nine international matches for his bite on Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini. Both Liverpool and the Uruguayan FA are planning to appeal FIFA’s ban, but if it is upheld, Suarez will be unable to enter Liverpool’s training ground until the end of October, which means he could miss at least 13 matches for Brendan Rodgers’ side.
The 27-year-old has claimed he fell and his face hit Chiellini on the shoulder, and he did not intentionally bite the Italy defender. In a statement to FIFA’s disciplinary committee, he said: “After the impact I lost my balance, that destabilised me and I fell on top of my opponent.
“At this moment I hit my face against the player leaving a small bruise on my cheek and a strong pain in my teeth and that’s why the referee stopped the match.”
Suarez is also unable to enter football stadiums as a result of the ban, which meant he was unable to watch Uruguay’s second round World Cup defeat to Colombia. Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho agrees that Suarez should be banned from playing football, but he argues that the stadium ban is unnecessary.
Liverpool are hoping to build on their very impressive campaign last season, and the enforced absence of the Premier League’s top scorer would be a huge blow to their domestic and European ambitions.
Suarez had been heavily linked before both Real Madrid and Barcelona before the incident against Italy. Despite the subsequent ban and the Uruguayan’s history of controversy, Barcelona are still keen to sign him this summer. The La Liga giants have been told it will require a bid of at least £80 million before Liverpool would consider selling their star striker.
