Liverpool Transfer Rumour: Liverpool rekindle interest in Borussia Dortmund's Christian Pulisic

Pulisic is the youngest player to represent the US national team

Liverpool have rekindled their interest in Borussia Dortmund starlet Christian Pulisic, according to The Daily Mail. The Reds manager, Jurgen Klopp, is looking to bring the player to Anfield as a potential back-up for Philippe Coutinho, who is set to be out of action until the New Year.

Klopp sees the youngster as an ideal replacement for Coutinho, who sustained an ankle injury during the match against Sunderland last Saturday and is set to take over five weeks to recover.

In addition to Coutinho’s injury worries, Senegalese forward, Sadio Mane too will be missing most of the January away at the African Cup of Nations. The Reds manager has turned to the 18-year-old in the wake of the absence of two main attacking threats in January.

Pulisic joined Borussia Dortmund in February 2015 from PA Classics, a local club where he grew up playing. After joining Dortmund he was first assigned to their U-17 squad and then later in the summer in the U-19 squad. Having scored 10 goals and proving 8 assists in just 15 games with the Dortmund youth teams, the player was called to join the first team over the winter break.

An attacking midfielder, the player’s low centre of gravity allows him to dribble and move at high speed and the youngster has recently been deployed as a winger at Dortmund.

A promising American prospect, Pulisic was the youngest player to represent the senior national team in a FIFA World Cup qualifier. In April 2016, he became the youngest foreigner to score two goals in the Bundesliga.

While the Merseysiders have always been keen on the 18-year-old, Dortmund have been unwilling to let go of the talented midfielder. The Reds boss will surely have to break the bank if he wants to sign the teenager in the January transfer window.

If reports are to be believed, the Reds will need to part with nearly $31m (£25m) to bring the youngster to the Anfield. It is no secret that Klopp has been a long time admirer of the 18-year-old American midfielder who joined the Bundesliga giants when the German manager was still in charge of his squad.
