Luis Suarez backed by Liverpool supporters in Steven Gerrard testimonial match

Luis Suarez

Luis Suarez‘s Liverpool career hangs in balance after he publicly told the club about his desire to leave the Anfiled club. Sensing an opportunity, Arsenal made a club-record offer of £40m plus £1 for Suarez in an attempt to try and lure Suarez by triggering his release clause, but Liverpool did not agree with the interpretation of that clause in his contract.

According to BBC, sources close to the player say he is mulling over a formal transfer request and may even take the club to court if the situation is not resolved.

But, despite all of this, the Liverpool supporters on Saturday gave Suarez a clear signal that they want him to stay by giving him a rousing ovation when he came on as a substitute after 62 minutes.

“It just shows you the class of the Liverpool supporters. They love their own and Luis is still very much part of the group,” boss Brendan Rodgers said.

Rodgers continued: “Maybe people wondered what kind of reception he would get, but that’s the type of supporters Liverpool are.

“Today was another message from them that they love him here. We all love him, as a manager, players and supporters. He was probably humbled by the reception.”

Rodgers concluded: “It is very, very simple: he is a top player and we don’t want to sell him.”
