Luis Suarez is the first player in history to score four goals in two consecutive La Liga games
Barcelona thrashed Sporting Gijon 6-0 last night thanks to another sublime performance by the deadly trio of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, and Neymar. But it was Suarez who stole the show once again with another four-goal haul in La Liga.
Here are the records that were broken after yesterday’s win:
1 – Luis Suarez becomes the first and only player in the history of La Liga to score four goals in two consecutive matches. His first came just a few days ago against Deportivo La Coruna where he was involved in 7 of Barcelona’s 8 goals.
8 – Aston Villa have had a terrible season and were recently relegated to the Championship after losing to United. Their whole team have managed just 8 goals since 16th January, the same tally Suarez has racked up in the space of four days. Astin Villa needed 14 matches for their eight goals!
34 – It’s safe to say Suarez is now top of the scoring charts in La Liga. He had only 26 goals until Wednesday and now has 34! Ronaldo was leading the race for the Pichichi with 31 goals but Suarez has overtaken the Portuguese in dramatic fashion.
If he manages to hold on to the top spot for just 3 more games he will be the first player to win the Pichichi award since 2009 whose name is not Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi. That will be some achievement.
29 – Mario Balotelli has scored 29 goals in the last 5 seasons. Suarez has 34 in this season alone!. Liverpool will be glad the Italian has stated his desire to stay at AC Milan instead of a return to Anfield.
9 – Suarez has now scored 4 or more goals in his career for the 9th time. Cristiano Ronaldo has done it 7 times in his Real Madrid career. The Portuguese has some catching up to do.
25 – Suarez scored his 25th career hat-trick last night. It was his 8th in a Barcelona shirt and 7 have come in this season alone! Messi has scored 8 hat-tricks in a single season which is the most for a Barcelona player. Only one more to equal his record for Suarez
10 – Suarez has also now been involved in 10 of the 14 goals Barcelona have scored in the last two games. His form is crucial to their title challenge.
5 – The Uruguayan is also now the only player to score 3 or more goals in at least 5 league games this season across the top 5 European leagues.
50 – Suarez is also now the only player to reach the 50 goal landmark across all competitions in a single season for Barcelona other than Lionel Messi. He is the 4th player in La Liga history to achieve the feat. The other three being Messi, Ronaldo and Telmo Zarra
40 – Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez have both scored more than 40 goals this season, the first time two players have reached that milestone in a single season in Barcelona’s history.
Other stats
23 – Neymar achieved a personal landmark after scoring 23 goals this season. It’s his highest ever tally since he joined Barcelona
3 – Although Barcelona aren’t the greatest at penalties they managed to put away all 3 last night. They now hold the joint record for most penalties awarded in a single game this season along with Sevilla when they managed it against Getafe and Malaga.
1 - Iniesta broke his assist drought at the Camp Nou yesterday. The last time he managed one at home was in March of 2014!
176 – Messi has now equalled Telmo Zarra for most home goals in La Liga which stands at 176. Only a matter of time before he surpasses that record
7 – Messi scored his 40th goal yesterday across all competitions. It’s the 7th consecutive season in which he’s achieved the feat.
