Luis Suarez says Roy Hodgson's words spurred him on against England

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has revealed that Roy Hodgson’s refusal to label him as “world-class” ahead of England’s clash as Uruguay contributed to his match winning display, reports London 24.

Suarez was almost entirely responsible for Uruguay’s victory, transforming a side that had collapsed and lost 3-1 to Costa Rica in their opener and helping them to a 2-1 win against England.

His two goals either side of Wayne Rooney’s equaliser secured a huge three points that could eliminate England, depending on Italy’s result against Costa Rica.

Suarez said: “It wasn’t revenge, but in England they talked about the injury and the coach had words that annoyed (me).

“My wife and my two children are important to me and Walter [the Uruguay physio] is also important, the goals were for him because of what he did for me,” Suarez said.

“I have to thank him. I scored the goals, but he is the man responsible for them.”

England last exited a World Cup during the group stages in 1958. Suarez suffered a knee injury towards the end of the season but managed to return in time for his nation’s clash with England. His return heralded a huge change in Uruguay’s fortune.

Suarez snuck in behind Gary Cahill to convert Uruguay’s first goal, before latching on to Steven Gerrard’s flick to fire home and secure the win for Uruguay.
