Rumour: Manchester United reignite interest in free-scoring Serie A defender
Manchester United are set to redouble their interest in highly rated Roma centre-back Medhi Benatia in the summer.
The Moroccan international only moved to <Rudi Garcia’s side last season from fellow Serie A outfit Udinese but has become a key member of the Giallorossi’s defensive line this term.
With just 18 goals conceded, they boast the best defensive record in the division and Benatia has played in all but two of their games. The 26-year-old’s impressive performances have not gone unnoticed across the continent and several European clubs are believed to be interested in his signature.
According to Talk SPORT, his agent Moussa Sissoko has confirmed that there are a number of interested parties that are monitoring Benatia’s talks with Roma, but also insisted his client is happy in the Italian capital for the meantime.
“He is fully mature – he is a rock in defence, unbeatable in the air, and has extraordinary technique and great human qualities.
“His future? The directors of Roma know that other big clubs are interested and watching. A meeting is planned with the club and we will see what will be his decision. Although today, he feels very, very well at Roma,” Sissoko insisted.
The Red Devils showed an interest in Benatia during his time at Udinese and manager David Moyes could be tempted to make a move for the defender following the news that club captain Nemanja Vidic will join Internazionale at the end of the season.
Mehdi Benatia has a 62% aerial duel success rate for Roma this season and wins more headed duels per 90 minutes than Manchester City’s Vincent Kompany.
