Rumour: Manchester United linked to Premier League maestro

David Moyes is set to test Newcastle United’s determination to keep hold of midfielder Yohan Cabaye with a £20 million bid for the Frenchman, according to The Mirror.

The United boss is plotting  an overhaul of his squad this January with several new arrivals in the pipeline, most notably Chelsea’s Juan Mata. However, with The Red Devils midfield often found lacking this season the Scot has made strengthening this area of his squad a priority.

Cabaye, who joined Newcastle from Lille in 2011, was also the subject of a bid from Arsenal in the summer, but was welcomed back into the fold by Toon boss Alan Pardew once his focus had been restored.

With the 28 year-old only just rediscovering his best form United’s reported £20 million bid is likely to upset Pardew, as he attempts to keep hold of his talismanic midfielder, who has scored seven goals this season.

While Cabaye is seen as a creative link that will add a significant goal threat to Moyes’ side as they chase a Champions League place, Newcastle harbour hopes of returning to European competition themselves as they sit just a single point behind the reigning champions. But at 28,with a top four club calling his name for a second time, Cabaye may not be able to resist the opportunity United have given him.

Yohan Cabaye (33) has created more chances this season than Tom Cleverley (7), Ashley Young (9), Nani (11) and Shinji Kagawa (5) combined.
