In what was another feather in the cap for the German legend in his illustrious career, Bastian Schweinsteiger was honoured with the special jury award at the BAMBI award ceremony 2016.

The ceremony took place on 17th of November at Berlin and Schweinsteiger was one of the attendees to take home the prestigious award.

Schweinsteiger was awarded for his contribution to the national side that spanned over 15 years. Having achieved monumental success in the international arena, he is one of the most loved and respected figures in German football. Not only that, he is also a fan hero for Germany’s most successful club Bayern Munich.

The BAMBI jury took into consideration the outstanding achievement the 32-year-old had with Germany, “With a hitherto unknown combination of discipline and effortless skill, Bastian Schweinsteiger has won the hearts of the fans and become one of Germany's best and most popular footballers.”

“His name symbolises sporting ambition and fair competition. He exudes both pure fighting spirit and a likeable, easy-going nature.”

Schweinsteiger was an integral part of the Germany squad that won the 2014 FIFA World Cup and played his heart out in the finals against Argentina. He has also been part of the Euro 2008 runner-up squad and is the 4th highest capped player of Germany. He retired from international football after the 2016 Euros but is still highly regarded in Germany for his contributions.

The midfielder spent 13 fruitful seasons with Bayern Munich and won eight Bundesliga titles, seven DFB-Pokal titles, a UEFA Champions League title, a FIFA Club World Cup and a UEFA Super Cup to stamp his mark as one of the most celebrated figures in Bayern’s history.

Last year he moved to Manchester United to play under his ex-boss Louis Van Gaal and was an instant hit with the United fans. With Jose Mourinho taking charge at Old Trafford this season, however, it has been a sharp decline for the midfield general who is now an outcast at Manchester.

Although the midfielder is back to training after being sent to exile he is yet to feature for the Red Devils this season. Unless there is another European club interested, a move to the MLS is most likely, with Chicago Fire reportedly keen on signing the 32-year-old.
