Manchester United transfer rumour: Jose Mourinho wants Edinson Cavani at Old Trafford
Manchester United and Jose Mourinho have lined up Edinson Cavani to be club’s leading striker in near future, according to reports in England. The reports suggest that Cavani has 18 months left on his current contract and is stalling on signing the new deal with PSG giving United a chance to sign the 29-year-old.
Cavani previously played with Zlatan Ibrahimovic at PSG where the duo was not in total sync as Cavani was often asked to play from the left wing to allow Zlatan play up front on his own. With Cavani rumoured to join United, we may see the two strikers fight it out to be Jose Mourinho's first choice striker next season.
Will Zlatan stay at United next season?
Although Jose Mourinho is convinced with the idea that Zlatan will indeed sign another 1-year deal to remain at Old Trafford and continue playing for the Red Devils. However, if Zlatan stays and Cavani is signed by United, we may finally see some competition for the Swedish striker which can improve United’s goal scoring.
Although Cavani is known for his occasional horror misses in front of the goal, but the Uruguayan striker has been a consistent scorer. Cavani has already netted 20 goals in as many matches for PSG this season and is regarded as one of the best strikers in Europe at the moment.
United facing no competition for Cavani
As things stand, Arsenal have backed out from the race to sign Cavani leaving only Manchester United as the team interested in bringing the 29-year-old to the Premier League. One major reason for United needing to sign a new striker is team’s appalling conversion rate. Mourinho’s men have taken more than 162 shots on goal this season but have only hit the target 37% of the time and scoring just 20 league goals.
Their lack of goals sees the team placed at 6th in the league table and needing a change if they are to turn their season around. Although a January move for Cavani is out of the picture, however, United look certain to make a move for Cavani in the summer.
What do the fans make of this rumour?
Despite the strong link-up with Cavani, Manchester United fans aren’t entirely convinced with the idea of signing the former Napoli man as he has been known to miss horrendous chances in key matches. Cavani’s age is another matter of concern for the die hard United fans, who think that a 29-year-old forward will once again be a stop-gap solution for the club rather than a long-term option.
