Manchester United transfer rumour: Memphis Depay angling towards Old Trafford exit in January

Memphis Depay: Another disappointment in the number 7 shirt

Dutch winger, Memphis Depay is considering a life away from Old Trafford as he realizes his career at Manchester United might be over. Come January and Turkish club Fenerbahce might look to lure away the youngster away from United on a loan deal.

In Thursday’s Europa League encounter between Fenerbahce and Manchester United, the 22-year-old was left out of the 21-man squad by Jose Mourinho. Europa League in itself has been a low priority for the new manager, and Depay’s exclusion might signal that his career at the 20-time English champions is over.

According to reports in the Guardian, it is understood that Depay is open to a temporary transfer with Fenerbahce showing considerable interest. Dick Advocaat, the manager of the Turkish side, is a self-proclaimed admirer of the Dutchman. After all, it was under Advocaat that Depay made his PSV Eindhoven debut.

As reported earlier, before the Europa League fixture started, Advocaat revealed that he was aware of Depay’s situation. He was quoted as saying, “The potential is there for him to be a good player. You cannot lose that. He has the quality to be a top player but the problem for him is that there are so many quality players in that squad.”

He stressed the importance of playing regularly to develop into a world class player. He said, “So for himself, it is important to start playing regularly at the age that he is at. Otherwise the way, I think, is that maybe he has to find another solution [club] because he is too good to sit on the bench.

“I still believe in him. He has the right mentality, the right character to play for United, but there are so many options there. Regular playing time will help his progression.”

Depay, who arrived at United for a fee of £25m in the summer of 2015, has not been able to replicate his form in Holland in 2014. Despite being provided ample opportunity under former boss Louis van Gaal, Depay failed to impress and clinch a starting place.

Last season he had scored only two league goals – a disappointing stat for someone of his likes. Under Mourinho, he has started only one match and has been used as a substitute in six matches.

Under the circumstances, Depay could move to a different club to replenish his lost form.
