Manchester United transfer rumours: Jose Mourinho wants to sign Danny Drinkwater

Drinkwater on his way to Old Trafford?

After an exciting game against Chelsea left Leicester on the wrong end of a result, it is now believed that Danny Drinkwater is on Manchester United‘s radar. Reports in the British newspaper Sun, are now emanating that Manchester United boss, Jose Mourinho is considering a £30million bid in the January window.

United spent around £150million in the summer bringing in the likes of Paul Pogba, Eric Bailly, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan but are willing to spend more in order to supplement their existing talent.

Drinkwater began his career at Manchester having been at the club since age 9 but never made a first-team appearance for the club. Instead, he was shipped off on loan Huddersfield Town before playing for other Championship clubs such as Cardiff City, Watford and Barnsley (also on loan).

Drinkwater joined Leicester permanently in 2012 and has been an instrumental member in the team’s rise to champions. His performances in Leicester’s run to the title were especially eye-catching and alongside Kante, Albrighton and Mahrez the midfielder became more consistent.

Manchester United take on Northampton on Wednesday night and will look to avoid a fourth consecutive defeat. Mourinho has come under immense pressure already and has been critical of his players in public.

United currently lack a midfield presence that can control the game. Pogba is yet to find his stride and the performance at Watford on Sunday highlighted many failings in midfield as Manchester failed to exert control. As a result, they slid to a 3-1 defeat on top of the derby defeat last weekend and the Europa league defeat against Feyenoord.

Leicester took on Chelsea at King Power stadium on Tuesday night and Drinkwater was part of the side which lost 4-2 after extra time. The Leicester team which had made seven changes to side, which won against Burnley took the lead through Japanese international Okazaki.

However, Chelsea rallied back through a fine performance from Fabregas to take away the win. Drinkwater picked up a booking in the game and Leicester also had a man sent off in the form of Wasilewski.

Drinkwater alongside fellow English international Vardy was the subject of interest for various clubs in the summer. The English international though signed a new five-year contract with the Foxes only this August.  At the time of signing the new deal, the midfielder had stated about wanting to extend his career with the Foxes.

The 26-year-old has grown as a player at Leicester and under the guidance of Claudio Ranieri became a more consistent performer last term. He made 37 appearances for Leicester last season and made his debut for the England national team before missing out on the Euros 2016 squad.
