Mancini admits Cavani was City target
Roberto Mancini has admitted that Napoli striker Edinson Cavani was wanted by him during his reign at Manchester City. The Italian was sacked by the owners after City failed to win a single trophy last season, having lost 1-0 in the finals of the FA Cup to Wigan Athletic, who eventually got relegated from the Premier League.
Cavani was linked to City on several occasions but the deal never went through. The Uruguayan international has notched more than 30 goals in all the three seasons that he has been Napoli.
Real Madrid, among many other clubs, are said to be very keen. Cavani has a £54m buyout clause at Napoli, which means only cash rich clubs like Madrid, Chelsea, City would be able to afford him.
“When I was at City I often spoke about Cavani with the management. I often talked with the board about Edinson because he interested us a lot.
“Cavani was somebody who could have been targeted. I don’t know whether he is of interest in the club’s new technical project, said Mancini.”
The Blues seem to have learned from their mistakes of last season when the club did not make any big name signings at the start of the window. The club have already made two big money signings this season in midfielders Fernandinho and Jesus Navas.
