Going into the encounter questions were being asked of the Chilean boss, who stubbornly said he would not change his tactics despite being beaten in the Premier League.
And it was the former Malaga manager who was proven right as Stevan Jovetic and Samri Nasri strikes saw off a limp Chelsea.
Speaking following the game, Pellegrini said: “We didn’t want to lose two games to Chelsea here at home. Chelsea are a very good team with good players.
“But the way we played today was important for the trust of the team and it’s important for continuing in the FA Cup, which for our team is a very important competition.”
Pellegrini added that the victory proved he was correct not to alter his attacking minded tactics for the visit of Jose Mourinho’s side.
“I had a lot of questions [asked about me] when we lost against Chelsea, [like] if we’re going to change our way of playing because we lost 1-0 but I repeat this team will not change this, the way we play.
“Today was a very important test which shows we will continue doing the things as we think they must be done.”
