Going into the encounter questions were being asked of the Chilean boss, who stubbornly said he would not change his tactics despite being beaten in the Premier League.

Pellegrini added that the victory proved he was correct not to alter his attacking minded tactics for the visit of Jose Mourinho’s side.

“I had a lot of questions [asked about me] when we lost against Chelsea, [like] if we’re going to change our way of playing because we lost 1-0 but I repeat this team will not change this, the way we play.

“Today was a very important test which shows we will continue doing the things as we think they must be done.”
