Marouane Fellaini waived £4m loyalty fees to push Manchester United move through
Marouane Fellaini waived £4m in loyalty bonuses to push through his £27.5 million move from Everton to Manchester United, according to the Telegraph.
Everton demanded £27.5m from United for the Belgian midfielder, significantly higher than his £23.5m release clause, that expired at the end of July and was written when David Moyes was the Toffees boss.
Moyes refused to go over the £23.5m mark, so Fellaini made up the difference by giving up £4m bonus to push the move through.
It looked as though United could end the transfer window without adding a senior player to their title-winning squad, but the 25-year-old submitted a transfer request just three hours before the close of the window.
United had been linked with Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera, Real Madrid’s Fabio Coentrao and Everton’s Leighton Baines but were unable to pull the deals off before Fellaini’s eleventh-hour deal on deadline day.
