Matthew Le Tissier set for a comeback at the age of 44
Former Southampton star Matthew Le Tissier has reportedly signed for non-league club Guernsey FC. A club spokesman said that the 44-year-old ex-England international-turned-pundit is available for the selection.
Le Tissier, who was registered by the club earlier this season, played his last professional game in 2002 after 541 appearances for Southampton and eight caps for England. His 16 years as a forward for the Saints saw him score 162 goals for them. Also, he was voted the PFA young player of the year in 1989-1990, and was awarded Match Day’s Goal of the season for a 40-yard lob against Blackburn Rovers, scoring against his long-time friend and former Southampton keeper, Tim Flowers.
Throughout his career, Le Tissier, who scored over 100 goals in the Premier League for Southampton, had an incomparable record for scoring from the penalty spot, converting 47 of the 48 that he took.
He has an opportunity to play for Guernsey because of the 17 games they have to play this month after postponements caused by bad weather and a run to the FA Vase semi-finals. But Tony Vance, the manager of the club, told BBC Radio Guernsey:
“I can’t see him being involved at this early stage of the run-in.
“We’ve got a group of players giving their all but if we’re in a situation where we’re struggling, he’s there.”
It is speculated that Matt will be playing on Sunday, 14th April, against Raynes Park Vale.
