Rumour: Mehdi Benatia set to reject Manchester City in favour of Chelsea move
Mehdi Benatia is set to reject lures from Premier League champions Manchester City in favour of a switch to Chelsea, according to the Daily Star.
The former Udinese centre-back has been one of the most sought after centre-backs in Europe after some fine performances in the Serie A and Chelsea, who reportedly submited a big for Benatia, have been heavily linked with the defender in recent weeks.
Benatia was reportedly set to discuss a new deal with Roma’s sporting director, Walter Sabatini, before the end of the campaign according to reports, dealing a huge blow to any potential suitors.
However, it has emerged that contract talks have stalled and Benatia is interested in his other options. Benatia has grown into one of the best defenders in Europe and the former Udinese man was a major part of the great season Roma had.
After David Luiz signed for Paris Saint-Germain, Mourinho is looking to shore up his defence by signing Benatia.
However, Manchester City were also interested in bolstering their back-line and finding a partner for Vincent Kompany, with Benatia the ideal candidate. But, it seems Mourinho and co. have beaten City to it, with Benatia preferring a switch to the former European champions.
