Memphis Depay nearly made me cry, says Midtjylland defender Romer
FC Midtjylland defender Andre Romer was close to tears after his side’s loss against Manchester United in the Europa League last night. Memphis Depay tormented the Danish right-back all night, as the Dutchman repeatedly made a fool out of the 22-year-old as United ran out 5-1 winners against the Danish champions.
Speaking to the Danish media moments after the game, Romer was honest in his appraisal of Depay, saying “I’ve never been so close to crying after a match as I was today. Memphis is the best player I have ever faced. It was difficult to do anything about it when he plays like that.”
Depay repeatedly burst past the Danish right-back, while also displaying his array of skills, performing 3 outrageous nutmegs on Romer during the course of the game. Romer went on to praise the Dutchman further, saying “He is the best. He can do anything. He went inside, outside, turned me around and used his incredible pace to get past me.”
Unforgettable night, for the wrong reasons
Romer’s night of torment was capped off in the final stages, as he was sent off for a second yellow card, dragging back Depay after the Dutchman had gone past him. The Dane was quite angry with the decision, saying “ It was a redundant yellow card – completely unnecessary. There was no reason to. Unfortunately, it is a match I will never forget.”
Romer also revealed the extent of the heartbreak suffered by Midtjylland at Old Trafford, especially after the Danes had taken a 3-1 lead on aggregate when Pione Sisto scored in the 27th minute. “We’d been looking forward to the match and had dreamed about playing in such a stadium all our lives,” said Romer.
“But it brings you down to earth when you go there and get smacked around.”
Memphis happy with display
Memphis scored the last goal of the night in the final minute, as he capped off one of his best displays in a United shirt with a fine long-range strike. Speaking to Fox Sports after the game, the Dutchman revealed his pleasure, saying “I am very happy with my goal and I am on the right track. I am still working very hard to improve each day.”
“This is a great feeling. We had to make amends for last week's defeat. We knew what we had to do and it is always a good feeling to be able to look at the scoreboard at the end and see we set the record straight. I think that we were clearly enjoying ourselves on the pitch. We all worked hard for each other and that is the most important thing for me then we can also shine individually.”
