Transfer Rumours: Milan clubs interested in Schweinsteiger

Schweinsteiger is set to leave Manchester United after an average first season

Bastian Schweinsteiger looks certain to leave Manchester United this summer with several clubs interested in the German legend. Schweinsteiger, who found playing time limited during his stint at Old Trafford could be set for a move to Italy, with both AC Milan and Inter rumoured to be interested in the midfield maestro.

Jose has deemed Schweinsteiger, along with several other players surplus to requirements and is expected to offload them by the end of this summer’s transfer window.

Left out of the United squad that faced Galatasaray, Schweinsteiger was reportedly asked to clear out his locker and was also sent to train with the reserves. With Michael Carrick, Morgan Schneiderlin, Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini providing adequate midfield depth, coupled with the imminent arrival of Paul Pogba, Schweinsteiger is not expected to play a major role in the season to come.

Schweinsteiger is the first among a long list of names to be shown the door - a list which includes Adnan Januzaj, Paddy McNair and Andreas Pereira.

The German’s career has been in decline ever since he was an integral part of Germany’s World Cup winning squad 2 years ago. Pep Guardiola, after sanctioning his sale at Bayern had this to say, ”When he does not have injury problems, I am completely convinced he will do very well at Manchester United,he is a top, top player. Unfortunately, during the last three years he was never in good condition.”

The midfielder was signed from Bayern for a fee of €9 million, becoming the first ever German player to play for the Red Devils. Schweinsteiger though had a frustrating season due to injuries and a lack of form. Schweinsteiger, the 4th highest capped German international in history, scored 1 goal in 18 appearances for United in the Premier League, in one of his worst seasons ever at club level.

AC Milan and Inter have both expressed interest in the player, but the German would have to take a significant pay cut in order to sign for either of the Italian giants. Schweinsteiger currently earns around €10 million a year, but that is set to drop significantly if he is to move away from Old Trafford.

With just 2 years left on his contract, Jose will be looking to cash in on the midfielder while he still can. Schweinsteiger also retired from international football on Friday after a disappointing campaign at the 2016 Euros.
