Milan puts Vidic at the top of their summer shopping list

According to various reports, AC Milan are making some serious interest in Manchester United‘s captain center back Nemanja Vidic. If this report is to be believed, then AC Milan will be making an offer close to £10m this summer. The Serie A club has been monitoring the Serbian defender’s situation at Manchester United for a while now. The report suggests that Sir Alex may also consider this move if a right offer is put on the negotiation table. Vidic is considered to be an ideal partner to Philippe Mexes at the San Siro.

Vidi? signed for Manchester United for a fee of around £7 million on 25 December 2005 from Russian club Spartak Moscow and became a crucial part of United’s defence, partnering Rio Ferdinand. But a series of injury problems has given a chance to younger players such as Johnny Evans and Chris Smalling, who have performed brilliantly this season. Vidic has started only 13 games this season and has appeared 5 times from the bench. He has been struggling to overcome his knee injury which he suffered during a Champions League group stage match against FC Basel in the 2011-12 season. Since his return from the injury, the United skipper has put up some stellar performances, helping United to go 15 points clear at the top of the Premier league table.

The Rossonerri are struggling in the defence this season. After selling Thiago silva to French club PSG for £30m, they were left short of a star defender and a brilliant leader in their defence. Currently, they are sitting 11 points behind Juventus in the Serie A and their prospects of winning the league have already faded. The AC Milan management believes Vidic will be the perfect replacement for the Brazilian defender as they look forward to build a strong team capable of challenging for the Serie A title.

But the question remains, why would Manchester United consider such an offer for its captain? Nemanja has been pivotal to  United’s success in the last 5-6 years and is an excellent leader and a master of his position. Manchester United will certainly struggle to replace him if they consider him selling this summer. The only reason that can be seen is the Serbian’s expiring contract at the end of next summer, which means the Manchester club will assess if he still has a future at the club. This can be seen as just a rumour but it would surprise all if Manchester United do sell him in the coming transfer window.
