Monaco targeting Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany?

Vincent Kompany

Free spending Ligue 1 side Monaco are targeting Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany, and could make a move for their man in January, according to the Express.

Reports in the summer linked the defender to Barcelona, but a move never managed to materialise and he is now being head-hunted by Claudio Ranieri as the man to bring experience to his back line.

Kompany has been one of the best defenders in the world over the past few seasons and would be the next step in Monaco’s rapid progression. Last season saw the former Anderlecht player complete an impressive 80% of his 54 tackles in the Premier League and win 40 of his 61 headed duels.

Monaco are looking to replace the ageing Ricardo Carvalho who turns 36 this season and feel Kompany has all the qualities to take the club to the next level. Captain for club and country, Kompany currently has a deal that doesn’t run out until the summer of 2018 and would therefore cost a massive amount of money if Monaco want to sign him, but would certainly be worth whatever price they can get him for as the defender comes into his peak years for a defender.

Another stumbling block other than the price of Kompany is his recent struggles recovering from injury. He is currently sidelined with a calf injury, missing from the defeat to Chelsea on Sunday, and has missed 17 games in the Premier League since the start of last season. This doesn’t look like deterring the joint leaders of Ligue 1 though, who are looking to strengthen while they are in good form as they aim qualify for the Champions League for the first time since.

Big money will be needed if they are going to be successful in their trail of Kompany, but money doesn’t matter to the provincial club who showed their spending power in the summer and could well continue their excessive spending this January.

Vincent Kompany made more defensive actions than any other player at Manchester City last season, scoring an average of nine per game.
