Jose Mourinho believes 'underdogs' Chelsea can win Champions League

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has claimed that, should the Blues advance beyond Galatasaray, they have a chance of winning the Champions League this season.

Mourinho has consistently played down his side’s chances of winning Europe’s elite competition but has now bravely stated that they could cause a shock by winning it. However, they must first beat the Turkish giants and former player Didier Drogba, who he once signed ahead of Ronaldinho.

He pointed out to the media ahead of Chelsea’s first leg with the Turks that there are several clubs in better a position to win the trophy, but Mourinho has caused upsets in the past.

In 2004, he won the trophy with a talented, but relatively unknown, Porto side and then, in 2010, beat Bayern Munich with Internazionale to claim a stunning treble.

“We are not favourites – that’s obvious – but I think when a team reaches the quarter-final anything is possible, so I think this round is very important for every team,” he told Sky Sports.

“The ones that reach the quarter-finals can start having a little feeling even if they’re not a favourite: Chelsea won [in 2012] when not favourite, I won it twice when not a favourite, and I didn’t win it when my team was one of the favourites to win it.

“This competition, because of the knock-out format, has a little space for a surprise but it’s clear there are at least three, maybe four or five teams that are by quality, experience and status obviously favourites,” Mourinho insisted.
