Napoli forward Lorenzo Insigne robbed at gunpoint
Napoli forward and Italy international, Lorenzo Insigne was robbed at gunpoint before his side faced Fiorentina in a Serie A clash. The 24-year-old was driving through the city of Naples and stopped at a traffic light when a gunman, riding pillion on a motorbike stopped beside Insigne's car and asked the occupants of the vehicle to hand over their belongings.
Insigne was driving late on Saturday night with two friends and his wife. Local media reports stated that as the robbers rode away, they asked the Napoli player to dedicate a goal to them during the match against Fiorentina.
Local media also reported that the robbers stole 800 euros in cash, some jewelry and a Rolex watch. His agent Antonio Ottaiano also spoke about the incident which certainly shook the player up: “Lorenzo suffered a terrible experience and told me that it was a really bad moment,”
Lorenzo though was not fazed by the incident as he joined up with his Napoli teammates in a practice session on Sunday before their game against Fiorentina, which ended 1-1. Insigne has scored 12 goals in all competitions this season as Napoli lie second in the Serie A standings behind Juventus.
This is just the latest in a host of crimes taking place in the city. The Italian government said that they would be sending extra troops to deal with the rising violence in Naples. In 2013 another Napoli player, Marek Hamsik was also robbed at gunpoint by masked men when they rode off with over 10,000 euros and a Rolex watch.
This was the second such incident with Hamsik as he was the victim of a similar incident in December 2008. Even his wife had to deal with criminals as her car was stolen in 2011 when she was pregnant though the car was recovered later.
