New York City FC appoint Patrick Vieira as head coach ahead of the 2017 MLS season
Patrick Vieira has been officially appointed the head coach of New York City FC, the club have confirmed on their official website. The former France and Arsenal captain is set to relinquish his duties as the manager of Manchester City’s Elite Development Squad after penning a three-year contract with the MLS club.
Vieira will replace Jason Kreis who was sacked a week ago and declared unfit to “improve the team for the next season and beyond” by the club owners.
New York City FC president explained in a statement, “The open position of head coach at New York City FC has prompted significant interest and I have no doubt that in Patrick, we have one of the most impressive young coaches I have encountered.
“Patrick’s ability, vision and the respect in which he is held by everyone who works with him, speaks volumes for his character and capacity to succeed. I am excited to work with him and I know the energy he will bring to the role will have a hugely positive impact across the club.”

Vieira will take up his new role as the head coach on 1 January 2016, ahead of pre-season. Notably, the veteran midfielder has never managed a football club in his career before. Following Alan Pardew’s sacking last season, Vieira was expected to take up the Newcastle United job but it did not materialize.

A celebrated player for both country and club, Vieira has featured for France 107 times winning the World Cup in 1998 and the Euros in 2000. At club level, he has won the Premier League title three times and FA Cup on four occasions with the Gunners. He also captained the undefeated title-winning Arsenal side in the 2003/04 Premier League season – a campaign that saw fans dub them The Invincibles.
