“Agreement getting closer” - Fabrizio Romano confirms Manchester United have received official offer from Mason Greenwood

Olympique Marseille have reportedly launched a move to sign Mason Greenwood from Manchester United. The Ligue 1 side have made the forward their top target this summer after the appointment of Roberto de Zerbi as their new manager.

As per football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Marseille have submitted a formal offer for the Manchester United attacker. Talks between the two clubs are currently underway.

The Italian journalist claimed that the Red Devils were open to a loan with an obligation to buy option, but want a sell-on clause added to Greenwood's contract. He posted on X:

"Understand Olympique Marseille have sent formal bid to Manchester United for Mason Greenwood! Talks underway between the two clubs, Greenwood's still OM main target with agreement getting closer. Man United open to loan with obligation to buy, sell-on clause included."

Apart from Marseille, several other clubs have also shown interest in signing Greenwood. Benfica, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus and Napoli reportedly made enquires while Valencia had a bid rejected.

Manchester United had not made a final decision on Mason Greenwood

Sir Jim Ratcliffe had left the doors open for Mason Greenwood when he took over at Manchester United. He admitted that the final decision was yet to be made on the Englishman, but the forward now seems to be on his way out.

Ratcliffe told The Athletic in April (via GOAL):

"He’s a Manchester United footballer so we are in charge of football. So the answer is yes, we have to make decisions. There is no decision that’s been made. The process will be: understand the facts not the hype and then try and come to fair decision on the basis of values which is basically is he a good guy or not, and answer could he play sincerely for Manchester United well and would we be comfortable with it and would the fans be comfortable with it."

Greenwood spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Getafe and they too were said to be interested in keeping him. However, they were reportedly priced out of the deal after talks with Manchester United.
