Alan Shearer names his ideal Marc Guehi replacement and pinpoints two changes England must make for Euro 2024 quarter-final

Alan Shearer has named his ideal Marc Guehi replacement for England against Switzerland in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024. The former England striker also highlighted two changes Gareth Southgate needs to make against Murat Yakin's side.

England manager Gareth Southgate has a major decision to make against Switzerland with Marc Guehi suspended for the game. The Crystal Palace defender is out of the quarter-finals after picking up a booking inside three minutes against Slovakia in the Round of 16.

Guehi has been one of the better players for the Three Lions in an otherwise underwhelming Euro 2024 campaign. With the 23-year-old set to miss the game, Shearer has named Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa as the replacement.

The former Newcastle United striker said, as quoted by Metro:

"I would go with Konsa. He is the one who has been involved a little bit more so I would bring him in."

Shearer also urged Gareth Southgate to start Cole Palmer and Anthony Gordon on the flanks following England's struggles against Slovakia. Palmer did well against Slovakia after coming on from the bench while Gordon was an unused substitute because of a minor injury.

While backing Kobbie Mainoo to keep his place in the middle of the park alongside Declan Rice, Shearer said:

"I would keep Palmer in I would bring Gordon in. I would keep Mainoo in because he’s done enough."

Switzerland shocked Italy in the Round of 16 to cause an upset beating the Azzurri 2-0 to make their way to the quarter-finals. England, on the other hand, were almost knocked out by Slovakia but managed to a 2-1 comeback extra-time win courtesy of goals from Harry Kand and Jude Bellingham.

Manchester United wonderkid hailed by club legend for his performance for England against Slovakia

Manchester United icon Roy Keane showered praise on Kobbie Mainoo for his excellent showing against Slovakia in Euro 2024. While England scrapped their way past Slovakia, Mainoo was one of the few English players who managed to impress.

Gareth Southgate gave the youngster a start alongside Declan Rice in the middle of the park. Mainoo did not let his manager down and impressed with his exceptional ability to progress with the ball. Keane hailed the 19-year-old stating (via The Mirror):

"You see the stuff he is doing, I played in that position but he's doing stuff that probably took me 10 years to learn. He's obviously had a great foundation at Man United and he's getting into good habits but we've seen in these big games - and when you're playing for Man United, every game is a big game for Man United, so he'll cope with all that."

The Three Lions will be up against Switzerland, who caused an upset by beating reigning champions Italy, in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 on Saturday, July 6 in Dusseldorf.
