Alan Shearer urges Gareth Southgate to drop 2 England stars for Euro 2024 Q/F clash against Switzerland

England great Alan Shearer has urged Gareth Southgate to drop two players for their Euro 2024 quarterfinals clash against Switzerland on Saturday, July 6. He believes Phil Foden and Kieran Trippier should not start the upcoming match to help turn the team's lacklustre performances so far.

Speaking with Betfair, Shearer said:

“I can see what Gareth Southgate is trying to do, but I would much prefer if we were more balanced on the left hand side, hence me wanting Anthony Gordon on that side because I don’t think the Phil Foden thing has worked there
“I understand they are unbalanced because of Kieran Trippier having to play at left-back, he’s going to have to change again because Guehi is suspended. Whether he thinks it is right then to change the system we don’t know. I would be surprised if he did.”

The former England international concluded:

“I think Phil Foden has been unlucky, he hasn’t looked comfortable in the system England want to play. That left hand side hasn’t looked right, we haven’t got in behind anywhere near enough on that side.
“His game is he wants to come inside and someone comes on the overlap. That’s been difficult for England to do with the lack of a left footer in Trippier. So, he has been unlucky. But he is going to have to make changes because they haven’t played well. I know they’ve won and they’ve got through but they were lucky.”

The Three Lions face Switzerland in the quarterfinals of Euro 2024 and will hope to make it past them and into the semifinals. Despite their poor displays so far, England remain one of the favorites to lift the trophy in Berlin on July 14.

England out to impress in Euro 2024 quarterfinal clash

England face Switzerland in the quarterfinal of Euro 2024 in Dusseldorf, keen to put on a convincing performance after a handful of lacklustre showings. The Three Lions came into the tournament as one of the favorites but have failed to inspire since their opening game in Gelsenkirchen.

Gareth Southgate's side face a team that they haven't lost to in seven previous meetings. However, they will be wary of their opponents, who dispatched Euro 2020 winners Italy in the previous round 2-0.

The weight of expectation hangs heavy on the shoulders of the Three Lions at Euro 2024. The team is expected to bring home the trophy and end a nearly six-decade-long wait for silverware.
