"Already showing what he’s capable of; I hope he can join us" - Pedri wants Spanish teammate from Euro 2024 squad to join Barcelona
Midfielder Pedri wants his Spain teammate Nico Williams - in action at Euro 2024 - to join him at Barcelona. Both youngsters have been key as La Roja have reached the last-eight of the continental showpiece.
Williams, 21, has been one of the standout performers for La Roja in Germany. Coming off a fabulous 2023-24 season with Athletic Bilbao - eight goals and 19 assists in 37 games across competitions - Williams was key in their Copa del Rey triumph, contributing three goals and five assists in six games.
The Spanish winger is now leaving his mark at the European Championships in Germany, scoring a goal and providing an assist to propel Luis de la Fuente's side to a blockbuster last-eight clash with hosts Germany in Stuttgart on Friday (July 5).
Ahead of the blockbuster contest, Pedri said that Williams would be 'spectacular' at Barca, telling Mundo Deportivo (via transfer guru Fabrizio Romano):
“Nico Williams would be a spectacular signing for us at Barcelona. It’d be incredible. He’s a player who is already showing what he’s capable of. I hope he can join us!"
Having sat out the 1-0 group-stage win over Albania, Williams scored and assisted once as La Roja fought back from a goal down to beat Georgia 4-1 in the Round of 16 earlier this week.
How has Barcelona star Pedri fared for Spain at Euro 2024 so far?
Barcelona midfielder Pedri has had a rather quiet Euro 2024 campaign with Spain so far. In three games, he has logged in 182 minutes and contributed an assist - in the 3-0 group-stage win over Croatia in the campaign opener.
It's his third straight major tournament for La Roja, having also featured at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and Euro 2020 - where he played nearly every minute of every game - including three extra times.
Overall, the Barcelona midfielder has contributed two goals and as many assists in 23 games for Spain since his senior international debut in a 1-1 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying draw at home to Greece in March 2021.
