“Andre is not even my name mate” - Premier League star hits back at reporter mistaking him for Manchester United’s Andre Onana at Euro 2024
Amadou Onana recently pulled up a reporter who seemingly mistook the Everton and Belgium midfielder for Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana at Euro 2024. The 22-year-old defensive midfielder started in his country's 1-0 defeat against Slovakia on Monday (June 17).
Despite a decent performance from the Toffees man, Belgium failed to put things together in the final third and even had two goals from Romelu Lukaku ruled out by VAR.
After the game, Onana was talking to reporters when he stumbled upon this particular journalist. When he was referred to as Andre, the midfielder hit back and said (via The 44's X handle):
"Andre is not even my mate. Do you know what I mean? Go on."
Despite being irritated by the journalist's mistake, Onana did take his question. The incident seems rather amusing, given Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana represents Cameroon, who are not even at Euro 2024.
However, the two players do come across each other while playing for their respective Premier League clubs. Now, the Belgium star will be focused on putting his country back on track to advance from their group.
Up next for Onana and company is a tricky fixture against Romania on Saturday (June 22). Their upcoming opponents put away Ukraine 3-0 in their opening game.
Currently, Belgium are placed third in Group E and will need to get back to winning ways if they are to stand a chance of progressing into the next round.
Chris Sutton slams VAR decision as former Manchester United striker's goal for Belgium is chopped off in Euro 2024 loss
Pundit Chris Sutton believes former Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku's second disallowed goal against Slovakia in Euro 2024 should have been allowed to stand.
The point of contention came in the build-up when Lois Openda seemingly handled the ball before setting up Lukaku, who slammed it into the net. Reacting to this call, Sutton said (via BBC Sport):
"That is scandalous. It is ridiculous, it really is. Openda doesn't intentionally push the ball into his path. That is harsh. In the Premier League, that goal would stand."
Unfortunately, Lukaku was unable to add to the 85 goals he's already registered for Belgium across competitions in 116 appearances. He will be expected to lead the line for his team when they play Romania next.
