"Another disappointing night for us" - Real Madrid star Luka Modric delivers honest assessment following UEFA Champions League loss to AC Milan
Real Madrid captain Luka Modric rued his side's defeat against AC Milan in the UEFA Champions League (UCL). The defending champions succumbed to a 3-1 defeat at the Santiago Bernabeu, losing for a second successive game at home.
Los Blancos were looking to bounce back from their most recent defeat, a 4-0 humbling at the hands of arch-rivals Barcelona on October 26. They were then met with stiff resistance from the Serie A side, who handed them their second defeat in four games in the Champions League this season.
The most decorated player in the club's history, Luka Modric shared his disappointment at the loss. The veteran midfielder pointed out that the Italian side managed to outplay Real Madrid in the key moments that decided the game.
"Another disappointing night for us. It's tough to assess the game. We didn't play well and Milan were better. We had some moments when we did okay but this was not our best performance," he told UEFA (via Madrid Xtra).
Carlo Ancelotti slipped further down the UCL standings to 17th place following the loss to Carlo Ancelotti's former side. They have picked up just six points midway through the group phase, having also lost to Ligue 1 side Lille.
In what was a chastening night for the champions, they conceded three or more goals in successive home games for the first time since May 2009. It was also the first time Ancelotti lost consecutive home games since he took over as the club's manager.
AC Milan stun Real Madrid in Champions League clash
AC Milan picked up a first-ever win at the Santiago Bernabeu, defeating Real Madrid 3-1 in their Champions League meeting. The Italian side were bullish before the game and had the performance to back it up against the reigning champions.
Malick Thiaw headed the Rossoneri into the lead just 12 minutes into the encounter with his first goal for the club. The home side did not stay down for long, with Vinicius Jr winning a penalty following a foul by Emerson. The 24-year-old dusted himself off before nonchalantly converting a panenka in the 23rd minute.
AC Milan continued to impress and soon went ahead through former Real Madrid star Alvaro Morata, who was on hand to convert the rebound after Andriy Lunin parried a Rafael Leao shot in the 39th minute. More excellent work from Leao saw him set up Tijjani Reijnders to score his side's third goal in the 73rd minute and seal the win.
