Arsenal star wants to take up coaching role under Mikel Arteta at the end of the season - ReportsĀ

Arsenal midfielder Jorginho is ready to join Mikel Arteta's coaching staff at the end of this season, according to Football Transfers. The Italy international has entered the final year of his contract with the Gunners and is likely to have the option to extend his stay for another season.

Jorginho first caught the eye with Napoli and subsequently followed Maurizio Sarri to Chelsea in 2018. He enjoyed a fruitful run at Stamford Bridge, winning the Champions League and the Europa League among other honors.

He also won the UEFA Player of the Year for the 2020-21 season and finished third in the Ballon d'Or race that year. Jorginho eventually completed a move to the Emirates in January 2023 on a one-and-a-half-year deal.

The 32-year-old has been in and out of the first team at Arsenal but remains one of Mikel Arteta's most trusted players. The Gunners tied him to a one-year extension earlier this year, but he has struggled for chances.

With intense competition for places this season, Jorginho has appeared just once for the north London side in the Premier League this season. Things could get further complicated once new signing Mikel Merino returns to full fitness.

Jorginho has two options, with Arsenal already initiating talks for his future. The player could continue playing for the Gunners for another season. He could also retire and start his coaching career under Arteta. Arsenal have already proposed this option to the former Chelsea midfielder, who has yet to decide.

Jorginho is a revered figure in the Arsenal dressing room and is a trusted voice in the squad. He apparently played a key role in convincing Riccardo Calafiori to join the Gunners from Bologna this summer.

With Mikel Arteta working on a relatively young squad, Jorginho's experience could be vital in their quest for success. A coaching role could also open up a window of opportunity and help him take the next step in his career.

However, the player could feel that he still has much to contribute on the pitch. The north London side have been on the rise in recent seasons and are close to converting their hard work into silverware. With Thomas Partey likely to leave next summer, Jorginho could still have a part to play on the pitch.
