“Arteta is ruthless. He has learned that from Pep" - Arsenal legend explains the difference between Mikel Arteta and Arsene Wenger

Arsenal icon Ray Parlour has lavished praise on Mikel Arteta, hailing him as a fierce manager. The pundit shared his thoughts on what sets the Spaniard apart from club legend Arsene Wenger.

Arteta took over the reins at the Emirates in December 2019. After a mediocre start that saw them finish outside the top four for three seasons, the Spaniard transformed the side into a title-challenging side.

The north Londoners endured two grueling title races against Manchester City in the Premier League over the last two seasons. While they turned up short on both occasions, Arsenal have certainly established themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the English top flight.

The Gunners enjoyed a successful tenure during Wenger's time, notably winning the league unbeaten in 2004 and being labeled the 'Invincibles'. The Frenchman established himself as a club icon beloved by fans.

However, Ray Parlour believes Wenger was loyal to his players while Arteta's tenacity distinguishes him as a coach. The pundit told The Sun:

“Arteta is ruthless. He has learned that from Pep. If you’re not doing your job, you’re out. In my time, Arsene Wenger was too loyal and wanted continuity with the same players, but Arteta is fearless.”

While he is yet to end the Gunners' 20-year wait for a Premier League title, Arteta has won the FA Cup and two Community Shields.

William Gallas warns Mikel Arteta against signing Arsenal target

Former Chelsea star William Gallas has urged Mikel Arteta not to sign Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino. The pundit believes the Gunners are better off sticking with Declan Rice in that position.

The north Londoners are keen to reinforce their squad this summer as they prepare for another title challenge during the 2024-25 campaign. According to reports, Arteta's side are set to submit a bid worth €30 million to secure Merino's signature.

The Spaniard impressed with his performances at the 2024 European Championships. The midfielder played a key role in Spain's triumph in Germany, scoring the match-winner in the quarter-finals against the hosts.

However, Gallas believes his former side have no need for another midfielder with a player like Rice in their ranks. He said (via Metro):

"Arsenal don’t need to sign Mikel Merino when they have Declan Rice who can play in that role. I don’t think Arsenal need another midfielder. They need a striker and maybe a winger."

Merino has scored 27 goals and provided 30 assists in 242 games for Real Sociedad since arriving from Newcastle United in 2018.
