Aymeric Laporte aims savage 4-word dig at critics doubting his inclusion in Spain squad after Euro 2024 triumph
Aymeric Laporte has hit back at critics questioning his place in Spain's squad after their Euro 2024 victory. The former Manchester City star took a jibe with a tweet on X (formerly Twitter).
Laporte departed the Etihad last summer and joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr for a reported £23.5 million. When the center-back was included in Spain's squad for the Euro 2024, pundits and journalists criticized the decision, doubting whether he could still perform after leaving Europe.
Laporte went on to play a key role in La Roja's victory and ended the tournament as a European champion, proving his detractors wrong. In response to his critics, the former Manchester City defender posted screenshots of criticism levied at him before the Euro 2024 on his X account with a four-word caption.
He wrote in Spanish:
"The rest is history."
The headline from El Confidencial read:
"Laporte's connection with Spain: he disappeared from the elite by going to Saudi Arabia and he's at the Euros."
The second screenshot, an article from columnist Alfredo Relano, showed the following headline:
"Laporte's flashy dodging."
Lastly, Spanish pundit Joaquin Maroto said on radio station Cadena SER:
"I saw Laporte play and I told the coach: he's not in the minimum form required to play in the Euros. He may be fit enough to play in Saudi Arabia, but not enough to play in the Euros."
Aymeric Laporte featured in all of his side's Euro 2024 fixtures except their group-stage match against Albania. He played every knockout game in the completion, including the final win over England.
Marc Cucurella responds to Gary Neville's pre-tournament criticism after Spain's Euro 2024 triumph
Marc Cucurella has fired back at Gary Neville for his pre-tournament criticism of the Chelsea star. The left-back issued his response on social media after Spain's Euro 2024 triumph.
Like his teammate Laporte, Cucurella's importance in La Roja's squad was also questioned. Neville was unconvinced of the 25-year-old's place in Luis de la Fuente's lineup, claiming that Spain are unlikely to win the tournament with Cucurella as their first-choice left-back.
He said on ITV before the Euro 2024 commenced:
"I think he (Cucurella) is one of the reasons I think they can't probably go all the way."
After playing an instrumental role in La Roja's victory, providing the winning assist in the final against England, Cucurella decided to strike back. He posted a picture of Neville's comments on his Instagram with a caption that read:
"We went all the way Gary. Thanks for your support."
