Ballon d'Or 2024: Barcelona star Aitana Bonmati wins Women's Ballon d'Or

Barcelona Femini midfielder Aitana Bonmati has won the 2024 Ballon d'Or Feminin. Bonmati has won the award for the second consecutive season, beating teammates Caroline Graham Hansen and Salma Paralluelo.

Aitana Bonmati won every available trophy at club level with Barcelona last season as she led her side to a historic continental quadruple. She helped the Catalan club win the Liga F, UEFA Champions League, Supercopa, and Copa de la Reina. Across the four competitions, she scored 19 goals, which has been her career best tally so far, and provided 18 assists.

Apart from that, Aitana Bonmati also led Spain to the inaugural Women’s Nations League title in February. The Barcelona midfielder scored four goals in the competition, including a strike in their 2-0 win over France in the final. Bonmati had also won the Ballon d’Or in 2023, beating Chelsea’s Sam Kerr and teammate Salma Paralluelo.

After winning the 2024 Ballon d'Or, Bonmati said (via ESPN):

"Thank you so much for your applause. I'm so grateful to be here to receive this award for the second time."
"I always say this is not something that you can do alone, I'm so lucky to be surrounded by wonderful players who help me to keep growing into a better player. So thank you to my teammates because without them I wouldn't be here, I would also like to thank my club and [Barcelona president] Joan Laporta. When you are growing and have more experience, you have confidence. It is not about the trophies, it is about having my team mates next to me."

Meanwhile, it is important to note that the last four winners of the Women's Ballon d'Or have been Barcelona players. Alexia Putellas won it in 2021 and 2022.
