The 2024 Ballon d'Or final countdown is underway with France Football revealing the ranks of the Top 30 nominees at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris (October 28). They have announced rankings five to seven with Manchester City forward Erling Haaland finishing above Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe.
Let's dive into the official rankings:
7) Lautaro Martinez
Martinez was excellent for Inter Milan last season, netting 27 goals and providing seven assists in 44 appearances across competitions, helping them win the Serie A title. He also scored five goals in six games during the 2024 Copa America, helping Argentina win the trophy.
6) Kylian Mbappe
Mbappe's final season at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) was a success. He garnered 44 goals and 10 assists in 48 appearances across competitions. The Frenchman inspired his side to Ligue 1 and Coupe de France glory. However, his struggles during Euro 2024 have led him to miss out on the Top Five of the Ballon d'Or standings.
5) Erling Haaland
Haaland has made the top five of the Ballon d'Or standings for the second year in a row after finishing second in 2023. The 24-year-old was a force to be reckoned with, scoring 38 goals and registering five assists in 45 appearances across competitions. He also won the Premier League Golden Boot, helping the Cityzens win their fourth title in a row.
"What Ballon d'Or is this?" - Brazil icon Marta vents her fury on social media after reports emerge suggesting Vinicius Jr will miss out on award
Brazil legend Marta has conveyed her anger on Instagram after learning that Vinicius Jr. has reportedly lost out on the 2024 Ballon d'Or award to Rodri.
Marta said (via @totalcristiano):
“I am hearing they are not giving Ballon d’Or to Vini Jr. What Ballon d’Or is this? TELL ME!”
According to Fabrizio Romano, Vinicius is set to miss out on the prestigious award later tonight despite being the heavy favorite to win it. The Brazilian winger inspired Los Blancos to three trophies last season, playing a huge role in their triumphs in LaLiga and the UEFA Champions League.
Manchester City's Rodri is expected to win the award for the first time in his career. The 28-year-old was arguably the best central defensive midfielder in the world last season, helping Spain win Euro 2024 and Manchester City win the Premier League title.
