Barcelona dealt blow as dream target negotiating new deal with current club - Reports
Barcelona have reportedly suffered a huge blow in their plans to sign Erling Haaland next summer. According to journalist Luis Miguelsanz, the Norwegian striker is already discussing a new deal with Manchester City.
Haaland has established himself as one of the premier strikers in world football in the past few seasons. The 24-year-old first caught the imagination of clubs across Europe during his time at Borussia Dortmund.
City won the race for his services in 2022 and the player has taken his game to a higher level since arriving at the Etihad. Haaland powered the club to a historic treble in his debut season.
He was also instrumental in helping them retain the Premier League title last season. The Norwegian now has 101 goals from 107 games for the reigning English champions and Barcelona are eager to see him at Camp Nou.
The Catalans are laying down succession plans for Robert Lewandowski, who will turn 37 next summer. Haaland has been identified as the right man for the job, with Barcelona president Joan Laporta dreaming of taking him to Camp Nou.
However, the La Liga giants' poor finances are already threatening to scupper their plans. Meanwhile, the Norwegian is also eager to end speculation regarding his future, even though his current contract runs until 2027.
All signs now indicate that the player is set to agree a new deal with Manchester City, despite the fear of potential sanctions from the Premier League.
However, Erling Haaland is likely to demand an affordable release clause in his contract for clubs outside England. While a move in the near future cannot be entirely ruled out, it now appears that Barcelona will have to rely on Robert Lewandowski at the moment.
How has Robert Lewandowski fared for Barcelona this season?
Robert Lewandowski has rolled back the years this season with Barcelona. The Polish striker has rediscovered himself under Hansi Flick, registering nine goals and two assists from 10 games across competitions.
Lewandowski has been a regular feature under the German manager, starting every game for the Catalans this season. He has averaged 3.8 shots per game in the league and 2.5 shots per game in the Champions League.
The 36-year-old's contract at Camp Nou expires at the end of this campaign. However, his deal will automatically get renewed for an additional year if he racks up a predefined number of appearances this season. Given his current form, it is highly likely that Robert Lewandowski will continue with the La Liga giants for now.
