Barcelona handed boost as transfer target rejects chance to join PSG - Reports
Barcelona target Nico Williams has reportedly rejected Paris Saint-Germain's (PSG) offer to join them this summer, per After Foot RMC (via Reshad Rahman). The Athletic Club star is supposedly yet to communicate his decision regarding his future with offers from multiple big European clubs.
However, Williams rejecting PSG's offer could mean good news for Barca. they continue to pursue the player and remain optimistic about his last-minute signing, per Gerard Romero.
After a sensational performance for Spain at Euro 2024, Nico Williams swiftly became one of the most demanded forwards in the summer transfer window. Barcelona had reportedly been eyeing the player for a while and made their offer after the Euros were over.
He was also linked with PSG and Chelsea. However, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that Athletic Bilbao are very confident about Williams staying at the club for another season. Barca are reportedly still in contact with Williams' agents and have not given up on the deal.
As per Diario Sport, the Blaugrana have offered Nico Williams a five-year deal with an annual salary of €12 million. The deal is reportedly more economically attractive than his current contract at Athletic Club. Yet, there is no confirmation from the player's side as of writing.
Athletic Club are confident of Nico Williams staying amid Barcelona links
The Nico Williams saga at Barcelona seems to be never-ending. While certain reports suggest that Barca are optimistic about signing him, Athletic Club remain confident that the Spaniard will stay at the club for another season.
As per SPORT, the Basque outfit expect Williams to be fit and ready for their 2024-25 La Liga opening match against Getafe on August 15. The report claims that Williams was close to joining Barcelona for a while, but constant pressure from his family and Bilbao's side led him to change his mind.
The 22-year-old winger returned to training with Athletic Club earlier this week. The club shared a video, where he said he is looking forward to next season with Bilbao.
SPORT further reports that Nico Williams could be offered a new and improved contract at Athletic Club if he decides to stay. His current contract runs until 2027. Meanwhile, Barcelona will reportedly continue to pursue their top target until the end of the transfer window.
The Blaugrana are set to sign Nico Williams' La Roja teammate, Dani Olmo, this week, as per Fabrizio Romano. He also grabbed eyeballs after a commendable performance for Spain in Euro 2024.
