Barcelona handed transfer boost as priority target has agreed to join the club - Reports
FC Barcelona have been handed a major boost in the pursuit of numero uno target Nico Williams. According to Spanish outlet SPORT, the Spanish winger has expressed his desire to join the Catalan giants this summer.
A few days ago, Williams re-joined Bilbao's pre-season training, suggesting that he would be staying put for the 2024-25 campaign. However, club sources are becoming increasingly confident of securing the 22-year-old’s signature. Now, with reports of Williams having indicated his preference for a move to Camp Nou, there might indeed be a base for the club's confidence.
However, the financial aspect of the deal remains a significant hurdle. Barcelona will have to meet the Bilbao forward's release clause, which is currently set at €58 million, with an additional cost adjustment due to inflation, bringing the total sum to around €62 million.
The club’s president, Joan Laporta, is reportedly fully committed to making the transfer happen despite the substantial financial outlay required. Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, has also been working behind the scenes to lay the groundwork for the transfer.
The Spanish outlet reported that Deco met with Williams' agent, Félix Tainta, in Zaragoza earlier this summer to discuss the terms of the player's contract, which has played a crucial role in bringing the deal closer to fruition.
Why are FC Barcelona adamant about signing Nico Williams?
Nico Williams had a breakthrough season in 2023-24, where he made 37 appearances scoring eight goals and providing a staggering 19 assists. His blistering pace, dancing feet, and elite movement throughout the pitch will immediately make him an asset for Barcelona.
The prospect of Williams linking up with his friend and national colleague Lamine Yamal has particularly excited supporters of the Catalan club. With the duo at his disposal, Hansi Flick could create a menacing attack.
At EURO 2024, the Bilbao winger was almost untouchable as he unlocked defenses at will and scored an all-important goal in the final against England. If he can sharpen his finishing, Nico Williams will be an incredible signing.
