Barcelona's financial issues to continue despite stunning deal with Nike - Reports

According to a report by La Vanguardia, Barcelona will continue to struggle financially despite their bumper new deal with Nike. The Catalan giants recently signed a bumper new deal with the company, reportedly worth €1.7 billion.

However, Nike are expected to make the bumper payment over the course of 14 years, instead of a lump-sum payment. This means the deal is unlikely to help Blaugrana meet LaLiga's 1:1 rule this season despite a windfall of €100 million from the deal.

The Catalan side have struggled financially in recent years and found it difficult to sign and register players freely. The Spanish giants will see the burdens of their financial situation ease with the deal despite it not being a silver bullet for their problems.

Barcelona will have to raise more funds to finally come onside of regulators but will be confident of their ability to do so. LaLiga are yet to review the details of the deal with Nike, however, the 2023 Spanish Champions could clear some of their financial issues following the deal.

Hansi Flick urges Barcelona to extend defender's contract

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has urged the club to extend the contract of veteran defender Inigo Martinez. The Spaniard has been ever-present for Blaugrana this season, forming a stable and impressive partnership with young Pau Cubrasi.

Martinez joined the Catalan outfit in 2023 on a free transfer from Athletic Club and has gone on to make 40 appearances since his arrival. The 33-year-old has impressed the German tactician, who urged the club to extend his deal past the summer of 2025. He said during a press conference on Saturday, November 9 (via Barca Blaugranes):

“His performances are very good. He is a leader. The team is very young and it is important to have experienced players. If he plays like this... Contract matters are not my job, but for my part if he continues like this he has to renew his contract. He has been incredible in the last few games. He is an important player for us.”

Barcelona are currently seated at the top of the LaLiga league standings after 12 games with 11 wins and one defeat. The Catalans have done so thanks to their impressive defense, with the 2023 Spanish champions conceding only 11 goals and keeping four clean sheets so far.
