Barcelona veteran expected to leave the Catalan giants this summer: Fabrizio Romano
Barcelona veteran midfielder Sergi Roberto is reportedly still on his way out of Camp Nou, and he's received interest from clubs abroad. The Spaniard is a free agent, as his contract with the La Liga giants expired on July 1.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has given an update on Roberto's future and reaffirmed he's parting ways with the Blaugrana. He wrote on X (formerly Twitter):
Sergi Roberto and Barca are still expected to part ways this summer. No agreement in place between Sergi and any other club so far, but exploring options after several approaches."
Roberto, 32, has reportedly received interest from the UK and Italy amid his Barcelona departure. He was a prominent member of the Catalans side last season, registering three goals and as many assists in 24 games across competitions.
Former Barca manager Xavi wanted the club to keep Roberto when he was still at the helm last season. The Spanish coach departed when the campaign concluded, and Hansi Flick replaced him, not intending to keep hold of the 11-cap Spain international.
Roberto joined the Catalans' academy in February 2006 and rose through the youth ranks before debuting at senior level in 2011. He made 373 appearances at Camp Nou, posting 19 goals and 43 assists and winning 22 major trophies.
Sergi Roberto is reportedly keen on a move abroad after Barcelona exit
Mundo Deportivo delves further into Roberto's situation and reports that he's eyeing a move abroad. Sevilla, Valencia, and Girona have sounded out the versatile midfielder, but his preference is to leave Spanish football.
Roberto, who has never played football outside of Spain, is most likely to move to the Premier League. He agreed on an extension with Barcelona in May, but this was put on hold after Xavi's departure.
Arsenal are the Premier League club that have most recently shown interest in Roberto. Reports in December claimed Mikel Arteta is a fan of the Spaniard's versatility amid question marks over his future.
The Gunners are set to strengthen their squad this summer after missing out on the Premier League title for a second season in a row. Arteta could do with more experience, and Roberto has a glowing resume of trophy success.
Roberto can play at right back, in defensive midfield and central midfield. He was Barca's captain last season and could be an astute option for any Premier League club.
