Barcelona women’s team star surpasses Luis Suarez's tally to become third-highest goal-scorer in club history

Barcelona captain Alexia Putellas has overtaken Luis Suarez to become the third-highest goalscorer in the club's history. She scored her 199th goal for the club in a 4-0 demolition of Real Madrid on Sunday, November 17, to achieve the feat.

Barcelona posted a statement after Putellas further cemented her name in the club's rich history. The statement read:

"Alexia Putellas has done it again. She's now in the top three for all-time top goalscorers for FC Barcelona after scoring the fourth goal in El Clásico at Valdebebas, smartly lifting the ball over the keeper and the defence. The women's captain has now passed Luis Suárez, having equalled his total of 198 goals after scoring against Eibar. She now has 199 goals, and is in outright third. Her next challenge? To pass the 200 goal mark."
"She scored her first Barça goal in 2012/13, on the day of her debut. Goal 25 came in the Copa de la Reina final of 2014 in Ceuta, number 50 away to Oviedo in 2015/16, number 75 in 2017/18 at Santa Teresa, and the magic 100 against Madrid CFF in April 2019. 125 was at home to Rayo Vallecano in 2021, the 150th early in 2021/22 at Villarreal, and 175 at Camp Nou in the famous Champions League game with Wolfsburg. Her 182th goal that overtook Jenni Hermoso to make her the women's team's highest ever scorer was netted at Atlético Madrid last season," it continued.

The midfielder joined Barcelona from Levante in 2012 and has since been a key part of the team. She won the Ballon d'Or Féminin in 2021 and 2022, becoming the first woman to claim the award in back-to-back seasons. This feat was later matched by her teammate Aitana Bonmati, who won the prestigious individual trophy in 2023 and 2024.

What next for Alexis Putellas at Barcelona?

Alexis Putellas has the chance to overtake Barcelona legend César Rodríguez in the goalscoring charts. She needs another 33 goals to match his tally and given the form she is in, the chances of her making the #2 spot her own are very much possible.

The Barcelona statement also acknowledged the chances. It read:

"Her next challenge is to catch César Rodríguez, the second highest goalscorer in Barça history with 232, and as a 30-year-old with a contract until 2026, she has every chance of achieving exactly that."

However, Putellas may have to settle for the #2 spot as the chances of her overtaking Lionel Messi (672 goals) are slim. She will need to score 473 goals to reach the Argentine's tally. And given that she is already 30 years old, she will have to score nearly 50 goals per season for the next 10 years to surpass Messi.
