“Best in history” - Ex-ISL star salutes Cristiano Ronaldo for setting new Saudi Pro League record in 4-2 win over Al-Ittihad
Former Indian Super League winger Zequinha commented on Cristiano Ronaldo's record-breaking achievement in the Saudi Pro League. Ronaldo scored a brace in Al-Nassr's 4-2 win against Al-Ittihad on Monday, May 27, to take his season tally to 35 goals in the SPL.
With the double strike, the Portugal captain went past the previous record of 34 goals in an SPL season held by former Al-Nassr man Abderrazak Hamdallah. Following the game, the 39-year-old forward posted on Instagram:
“I don't follow the records, the records follow me.”
Former Atletico de Kolkata winger Zequinha commented on Ronaldo's post saying:
“Best in history 👏🏻👑🙏🏻"
Zequinha is a Portuguese winger himself, who registered three goals and two assists in 15 games for ATK in the only season he played in the ISL. As for Ronaldo, he has now netted 44 goals in 44 games along with 13 assists for Al-Nassr this season.
Cristiano Ronaldo on breaking the Saudi Pro League record for most goals in a season
Ronaldo's brace helped Al-Nassr beat Al-Ittihad 4-2 to finish the season in second place. He netted 35 of the 100 goals scored by Al-Nassr in the league, helping them collect 82 points in 34 games.
Reacting after the game, Ronaldo said (via The Al Nassr Zone):
"I'm very happy today. We finished the season with a victory and an important historical record for me. I wasn't waiting for the number and chasing it, but it was important to me after I got it."
Overall, he has registered 58 goals and 15 assists in 63 games for the Saudi Pro League club since joining them in January 2023. Ronaldo has previously finished as top scorer in the Premier League, La Liga and Serie A.
The Portuguese star is now set to lead his team in Euro 2024, where Portugal qualified with 10 wins in 10 games. Ronaldo netted 10 goals in the qualifiers.
