"Bottling by November", "Arteta just doesn't learn" - X reacts as Arsenal slump to a 1-0 loss against Newcastle in PL clash
Arsenal fans expressed their dissatisfaction on X after they succumbed to a 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday, November 2. Mikel Arteta’s men suffered their second defeat of the season at St. James' Park, having lost to Bournemouth 2-0 at the Vitality Stadium in October.
Prior to this clash, Arsenal were without a win in their last two Premier League games. A win against Newcastle would have seen them move to within touching distance in the Premier League title race. However, Eddie Howe’s men pulled up an upset as they repeated the scoreline of their clash with the Gunners nearly a year to the day at St. James' Park.
The Magpies came into the contest on a poor run of form in the Premier League, as they were on a five-game winless run in the league (L3, D2). As expected, Arsenal were the better team in the early minutes of play, but it was Newcastle who scored first. Alexander Isak put the hosts ahead in the 12th minute as he powered a header past David Raya from an Anthony Gordon beautifully lofted cross.
Mikel Arteta’s men struggled to restore parity before the break as the Newcastle defense proved a hard nut to crack. The next 45 minutes played out much like the first as the Gunners failed to register a shot on goal. Newcastle sat back in the dying embers of the game to protect their lead. Their decision paid dividends in the end as they eventually took all three points to move up to eighth on the Premier League standings.
After the match, Arsenal fans took to X to express their disappointment about the loss. One fan wrote:
''Classic Arsenal, bottling by November.''
Another wrote:
''The title race is over for Arsenal! Mikel Arteta just doesn't learn.''
Another made a mockery of their defeat, asking them to go to the country where their shirt sponsor is domiciled:
''Go to Dubai immediately'' @CHIPFAT_remarked
''Patrice Evra was right, Arsenal is like watching Netflix… you always want the next season to come!'' another jokingly asserted
''Not a championship team right now'' another chimed in
Mikel Arteta said Arsenal deserved to lose following 1-0 defeat to Newcastle
Mikel Arteta wasn’t impressed with his side’s performance on Saturday and said that they didn’t deserve to win the match. The Spaniard is seeing his set objectives for this season not going according to plan as Newcastle handed them their second defeat of the campaign.
Before the season began in earnest, Arteta revealed that he aims to claim all the possible 114 points in a Premier League season. After Bournemouth made that objective unattainable in October, Newcastle inflicted further damage. Arteta said to Premier League Productions:
"We deserved to lose today. I thought we started really well and were really dominant. We didn't defend the box well enough. Credit to them. They scored a great goal with a good ball. Then the game changes and you start to play a different game. You have to adapt and we didn't do that well enough. I am very frustrated.
"We got dragged into a game they are looking for constantly and we couldn't play the game that we wanted. We had two big chances - Mikel had a big one, Declan had a big one. We lacked answers."
He added:
"We can say whatever we want. We will struggle to find the words today. We have to show it on the pitch on Wednesday night. You have to be at your best every time to give yourself a chance to win".
Arsenal will turn their attention to their next match against Serie A side Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League at San Siro on Wednesday, November 6.
