Breaking: Dutch fan shot by Hamburg police after threatening cops with an axe and incendiary device
A Dutch fan has been reportedly shot by the Hamburg Police in the city’s Reeperbahn ahead of the Netherlands' Euro 2024 clash against Poland. As claimed by Ian Herbert on X (formerly Twitter), the fan threatened an officer with a pick axe and ‘an incendiary device.’
As per the journalist, the Hamburg Police fired warning shots before shooting the fan. It has been revealed by the police that the Dutch fan is injured and receiving treatment.
As reported by The Mirror, officers first used pepper spray to disarm the fan before firing several shots. The man immediately collapsed and was taken away in an ambulance and the area has been cleared.
The Reeperbahn area in Hamburg is near the area where thousands of Netherlands fans have gathered ahead of their Euro 2024 opener. Plenty of Polish fans have also gathered in the city.
With Poland and Netherlands both bordering Germany, both nations are well supported. The two countries find themselves in Group D alongside France and Austria.
Dutch skipper Virgil van Dijk names 3 favorites to win the Euro 2024
Liverpool and Netherlands skipper Virgil van Dijk has named England, France and Germany as the three favorites in the Euro 2024. The 32-year-old hopes that the Oranje can live up to the expectations and finally perform well in a major competition after a long time.
When being asked to name the favorites for the silverware, the Liverpool captain was quoted as saying by AFC Ajax:
"Are we favourites? England are really good, Germany, France.. but so many other aspects will play a part too. Hopefully, we can be up there too."
The Oranje finished second in their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign behind France, winning six out of eight games. They open their Euro campaign on Sunday, June 16, with a fixture against Poland.
Virgil van Dijk, who captains both Liverpool and Netherlands, has 68 caps for his country and has found the back of the net nine times. The centre-back enjoyed a brilliant campaign for Liverpool last time out, featuring 48 times across competitions and helping the Reds keep 15 clean sheets.
He also contributed four goals and two assists as Jurgen Klopp's side finished third in the Premier League and won the League Cup.
