Breaking: Florian Wirtz scores late equaliser to push Euro 2024 quarter-final between Germany and Spain to extra time 

Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz struck to restore parity for the hosts Germany at Euro 2024 against Spain in the quarter-final on Friday, July 5. The 21-year-old forward scored in the 89th minute of the game to restore parity and see the hosts drag the game into extra time.

Wirtz, who was a part of the invincible Bayer Leverkusen side that went undefeated domestically last season, continues his unbeaten streak in his homeland. The goal was the first goal La Roja conceded to an opposing player in the tournament. The only other goal they conceded at Euro 2024 came via an own goal from Robin Le Normand in a 4-1 win against Georgia.

The hosts will be keen to eventually win the match against their Iberian opponents and end a decade-long run without beating them. The goal came after Stuttgart defender Maximilian Mittelstaedt played a ball into the Spanish box. His effort was headed by Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich to the Leverkusen forward, Florian Wirtz to finish smartly.

The goal sees the game head into extra time where both sides will struggle to wrap the game up within 30 minutes. The hosts will hope to build on their goal and potentially get another to see them head into the semifinals of the tournament.

Germany have had the best of the possession in the second half and are playing with the hope of winning Euro 2024 on home soil.
