Breaking: Luka Modric misses penalty for Croatia, gives them lead within a minute and sets new record at Euro 2024
Luka Modric scored a rebound goal for Croatia immediately after missing a crucial penalty in their ongoing Group B clash against Italy at Euro 2024. Croatia will qualify for the knockout stage if they're able to secure a win against Italy in tonight's final group stage game.
After the first-half ended goalless with Italy leading the race for the second spot in Group B, the Croatians won themselves a penalty after a handball from the Italian midfielder Davide Frattesi.
Modric took a right-footed shot towards the Italian net to convert the potential game-winning penalty, but it was saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma.
However, things did not go in favor of the Italians, as the Real Madrid star is not one to give up. Moments after missing the penalty, Modric scored for Croatia.
Striker Ante Budimir did well to get on the end of a cross, but Donnarumma pulled off another crucial save. However, the Croatian skipper was at hand to convert from point blank range and rectify his previous miss.
Luka Modric sets record as the oldest player to score in Euros with goal against Italy
Luka Modric is now the oldest player to score in the European Championships following his rebound goal against Italy in the 55th minute. At the age of 38 years and 289 days, Modric broke the record previously held by Austrian player Ivica Vastic, who scored against Poland at Euro 2008.
Croatia's group stage game against Italy on June 25 marks Modric's 178th appearance for his country since his debut in 2006.
