Bruno Fernandes jokes England can only beat Portugal on FIFA ahead of possible Euro 2024 showdown

Portugal star Bruno Fernandes has jokingly claimed that England can only beat his national team on FIFA/FC ahead of a potential encounter at the UEFA Euro 2024.

While playing FC 24 in a recent video for Pro:Direct Soccer, Fernandes opined on The Three Lions. He said with a smile (h/t X/@UtdDistrict):

"The only thing I have to say is that this [on FIFA] is the only chance England have of beating Portugal."

The Three Lions, who lost on penalties to Italy in the Euro 2020 final, finished atop Group C of the Euro 2024 with five points. They have been criticized for their poor outings having won just one of their three group-stage games and netted just twice at the tournament.

Portugal, on the other hand, topped Group F of the Euro 2024 with six points from three outings. A Selecao registered two straight wins against Czechia and Turkey before recording a 2-0 loss to Georgia.

While England will take on Slovakia in their last-16 match on June 30, Fernandes' side will next face Slovenia on July 1. With the two teams on the opposite bracket of the draw, the pair could lock horns with each other in the final of the tournament on July 14.

England told to axe superstar at Euro 2024

Speaking to Sky Germany, ex-Germany star Dietmar Hamann urged England boss Gareth Southgate to drop Jude Bellingham from his starting XI at the ongoing Euro 2024. He said (h/t Metro):

"There are no two opinions about [their] performance at this European Championship. The English may have won their group, but they struggled through the preliminary round and were disappointing across the board. A large part, if not the entire English public, has lost faith in the coach. The players are aware of this, and I can imagine that there are also some doubts within the team."

Sharing his two cents on England's next lineup, Hamann continued:

"Southgate is letting things go but he has to make a decision. Between Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham, only one can play. For me, you have to take Bellingham out [of the lineup], Foden in the middle and then Cole Palmer and Anthony Gordon on the flanks."

Bellingham, 21, has scored once in three matches at the Euro 2024.

The midfielder relished an excellent campaign for Real Madrid in the 2023-24 term as he registered 23 goals and 14 assists in 42 games.
