"Built him up onto a pedestal and he hasn’t really delivered" - Ex-PL star says Manchester United man has not lived up to his potential
Former Premier League striker Troy Deeney has suggested that Manchester United star Marcus Rashford has failed to meet his lofty expectations. The former Watford man claimed that the winger received a lot of hype but his performances have not matched them.
He said (via the Three Up Front podcast):
“When it comes to players who haven’t fulfilled their potential, I’d have to look at Marcus Rashford.
“We’ve built him up onto a pedestal and he hasn’t really delivered. He hasn’t lived up to the hype and the grandeur that the media have put on him.
"When you’re put up to such a high standard, the expectation becomes so unrealistic that it is very difficult to ever achieve that.”
Rashford endured a difficult 2023-24 season for Manchester United. After a brilliant 2022-23 campaign where he bagged 30 goals in all competitions, the winger managed just eight goals in 43 appearances last time around. He eventually also lost his place in the England squad that traveled to Germany for Euro 2024.
The 26-year-old remains one of the top prospects to make it out of the Red Devils' academy. He made his debut for the senior side in February 2016, scoring twice in a 5-1 win over Danish side Midtjylland in the Europa League. In all, he has made 405 appearances for the side, collecting 131 goals and 67 assists.
Fabrizio Romano shuts down rumours of loan move for Manchester United star
Manchester United attacker Antony will not depart Old Trafford towards the end of the summer transfer window. According to Fabrizio Romano, the Brazilian winger has said that he would stay at the club.
This comes after a report from Simon Jones of the Daily Mail that claimed that the winger was a loan target for La Liga side Real Betis. Los Verdiblancos had their eyes set on Red Devils duo Antony and Christian Eriksen but it seems the winger will not be leaving.
Antony did not make the starting XI for either of Manchester United's two Premier League games. He came off the bench in stoppage time in their loss against Brighton & Hove Albion. Erik ten Hag has preferred to use Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho at right wing so far.
The 24-year-old has been a huge disappointment since completing a huge move £86 million move from Ajax in the summer of 2022. He has made 83 appearances in all for the side, bagging 11 goals and five assists.
