"Can't make this up" "Be humble eh" - Fans react as Erling Haaland misses penalty in UCL game between Manchester City and Sporting CP
Fans were left surprised after Manchester City striker Erling Haaland missed a penalty in his side's 4-1 loss to Sporting CP in the Champions League on Tuesday, November 5. The Premier League champions also lost to Bournemouth in the league on Saturday, November 2, with Haaland failing to score in both games.
Haaland began the 2024-25 season in terrific form, scoring 10 goals in his first five Premier League outings. In the five league games since then, the Norway international has scored just once as his form dwindled.
Haaland was in the spotlight for Pep Guardiola's side as he failed to score against Sporting. His best opportunity came in the 69th minute when he crashed a shot onto the frame of the goal from 12 yards out after the VAR awarded City a penalty for a handball.
Fans questioned the form of the star striker, whose performances have been nothing to write home about. They took to X to share their thoughts on the performance of the 24-year-old.
"ERLING HAALAND HAS MISSED A PENALTY FOR MANCHESTER CITY!" a tweet read.
"Be humble eh π€£π€£," one wrote.
A fan asked a question to understand the striker after the game.
"ohh no, Haaland watchu doing broo", they wrote.
Another fan requested that the forward be sent to the bench after seeing his struggles in front of goal.
"Thatβs it. Bench him", they posted.
Another fan expressed their disbelief at the Norwegian striker missing the penalty.
"You can't make this up ππππ", they wrote.
Haaland missed the penalty kick with the game at 3-1, killing off his side's hopes of potentially snatching one or three points in Lisbon. The former Borussia Dortmund man completed just five passes as he struggled to impose himself on the game. He also missed three big chances as Manchester City bowed to a superior display from Sporting CP.
Gyokeres triumphs in Scandinavian shootout as Sporting CP defeat Manchester City
Sporting CP hotshot Viktor Gyokeres scored a hat-trick to help his side record a comprehensive 4-1 win over Pep Guardiola's Manchester City. The Portuguese champions maintained their unbeaten start to the UEFA Champions League this season with their third win in four games.
A lot of the build-up to the game was focused on the fact that Erling Haaland and Gyokeres, both from the Scandinavian region, would face off. The match lived up to its billing as the Swede scored thrice to lead his side to victory over Manchester City.
Gyokeres scored once in the first half to respond to Phil Foden's opener before scoring twice from the penalty spot in the second 45. Maximiliano Araujo also got on the scoresheet for the Portuguese champions as they claimed all three points at home.
